What's In the Works |
Reid Flock: Hands-on workshop with Reid
Flock from Hamilton, March 3-4, 2012. You might have seen his feature at Harbinger Gallery this fall, or remember images of his teapots
with wild, coloured reed handles from Sheila Clennell’s reed handle workshop. Reid has also won many awards, recently
from the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and FUSION’s Fireworks 2011.
Marlen Moggach Empty Bowls Handbuilding Session with Marlen Feb 6.
Stephen Hawes will be offering a Wheel II Class starting in March, watch for details in upcoming newsletters.
Judy Donaldson has been doing smoke firing in Audrey Killoran’s technique, learned at last spring’s FUSION
Conference in Toronto. Instead of firing outdoors in a modified garbage can, these smoke firings are done with just 1 cup
of sawdust, in a small metal container inside an electric kiln and take only 1 ½ hrs. The results are very even and
predictable and look especially good on burnished or terra sigilatta surfaces. A one evening workshop will be offered on
this in the spring. Perhaps it could be a two part workshop with someone teaching terra sigilatta techniques the first night.
Stay tuned to the newsletters for more info.
PMC: In May there will be a one day workshop with Marly Penner and Angie Karst of Studio 28 on working with PMC
(Precious Metal Clay). This pair has travelled the world studying various techniques for texturing and finishing this
medium in its various metals. They are passionate about offering a detail oriented workshop with interesting twists. Once
again, we’ll publish details as the month approaches.

Empty Bowls
Volunteer Request
A special thanks to all members of the Workshop
that helped with the 2011 Empty Bowls. Already
this summar we've been busy trying to get a jump
start on the bowl making for 2012 Empty Bowls.
Gillian threw and trimmed 65 bowl during the
celebrate summer event. We had one mishap with the
bowls while they were drying. A mouse got into the
bowls and took a few bites, scratched and knocked a
few to the floor. I guess it was less to trim. We
left a couple as they were, because they were
interesting. Thanks go out to Gillian for her
outstanding work and her sense of humor with
incorporating the mouse bites and scratches into the
work.
The clay for the 2012 event is upstairs in the
closet. If you want to support the event just sign
the list on the door and take some clay. You can use
the glazes at the workshop, we would appreciate if
you glazed them yourself. Leave them on the shelves
in the glaze room by the glaze test tiles. Please
indicate if your bowls will be ready for the Dec.
firing. We need 600 bowls for the event and when
the kiln only holds 170 we need to have it filled
each time we fire. The gas firing for the
bowls is scheduled for Dec. 1, 2011. The kiln holds
approximately 170 bowls. We've had a firing during
the summer and we have around 150 bowls finished.
The next firing is May 1, 2012. It's not
enough to wait for change it's up to us to make the
change and with our event we do help create a small
change in our community.
As always for 2012 there are many positions to fill prior to the
event, during the event and with cleanup and you are
encouraged to participate by contacting Harriet Falk
at 519-744-2927. With regard to bowl production you
should contact Jackie Jonescu at 519-741-8531.
This will be our 14th year in running this event and to
date we have raised $169,000.00 for the Food Bank
who are able to generate $8.00 worth of food with
every dollar donated. If you have any
questions, don't hesitate to phone Laurie Cowell at
519-884-1408. |
