Sunday, 07 June, 2026 12 noon – 3:00 PM

Cost: $85.00 + $11.05 (HST) = $96.05

What will I learn and create at the workshop?

 Learn two printing processes for clay: LITHO IMAGE TRANSFER and REVERSE-LINE

IMAGE TRANSFER

 Learn to make Litho-ink from stains and other materials supplied in the workshop, or you may bring your own dark Mason stain colour (25g) to make ink***

 Create two or three LITHO TRANSFERS (Optional: Create a “Reverse-line transfer” from a line drawing of the same or a different image on one of your slabs, or on the cylinder.

LITHO TRANSFER PRINTING WORKSHOP Q & A

1. What is the Lithography Process?

 LITHOGRAPHY Printing* is based on the principle that grease and water repel each other. The lithography process relies on the toner from a photocopier or laser printer which is somewhat greasy. Printing is done directly on soft leather hard clay, transferring an image from a photocopy or laser print.

2. What do I bring to the Workshop?

 Images: Three freshly-printed (day before the workshop) black and white, laser-printed or photocopied images (same or different). This can be a copy of a high-quality photograph, drawing or other artwork. The image size should be 3” x 4” maximum, in high contrast, with grey tones.

 One SOFT LEATHER-HARD** straight sided cylinder in white clay. (Keep it on the bat if you want to adjust the form on the wheel after printing). Flexible enough to drape over a hump mold, not straight out of the bag.

 Two SOFT LEATHER-HARD white clay slabs (up to 5” x 7” each, (may be a 5-inch square tile or cut round) slightly larger than the size of your image.

 Pottery tools, latex gloves, dust mask, metal rib, burnishing tools, plastic wrap, sponges, towel, one tiny lidded jar for mixed ink (or a small zip lock bag).

3. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

 Ingrid Mayrhofer (BFA, MA, York University) is a visual artist, curator, educator and community arts practitioner. Born and raised in Austria, she has exhibited in Canada, Austria, Korea, Japan, Serbia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba and Chile.

 Since her student years at York University (MFA, MA), Ingrid has placed her art production in its social context. In addition to her double studio major in printmaking and photography, she has worked with new media, and also employs printmaking techniques to create narratives for her pottery.

 Having moved away from overt “political” imagery in the nineties, she initiated a long- term, hands-on, intervention with culture and nature in 2000. Her practice includes numerous community art collaborations and curatorial projects, as well as international artists’ exchanges. Since moving to Hamilton, she has participated in four public art banner projects there, as well as showing her work across Canada and abroad. Her ‘Four Elements Series’ is scheduled for exhibition at the Helson Gallery later this year.
