Handbuilding Online e-Clay Class

Thursdays, 6:30 - 9:30pm
February 16 - Apr 6, 2023
Fee: $300

This continuing handbuilding class will expand your range of handbuilding techniques. Create sculptural pieces & explore surface decorating techniques.
The course is structured as a hybrid class where half of the class will be in the studio with the instructor and the other half will be working along from the comfort of their own home studio.

Included in the cost of the course is the glazing and firing of your pots. Students will need to deliver ‘greenware’ to the Waterloo Potters’ Workshop for firing. You will have a choice of two base glazes and two additional glazes for the rims of your pieces. More information and examples will be provided at the start of class.
Your instructor is Eekta Trienekens, an enthusiastic teacher who loves sharing the amazing things you can do with clay.

What we will work on:
- Pinch sculpture
- larger coil building
- stiff slab construction; making templates for house, tower, decorative box
- soft slab slump sculpture
- finishing and details
-glazing, underglaze wash and -painting

Tools required:
- metal serrated rib, silicone rib
- wooden sculpture tools; chopstick, skewer etc.
- cardboard box and box cutter

- Clay (PSH 519s recommended)
- optional: some underglaze colours or coloured slips
- Smartphone or laptop to view and join in if you have signed up as part of the online group.

Classes will be shared over Zoom. Recordings will be made available for review. A tech session will be scheduled ahead of class to help you test your setup.
Note: This class is part of the e-Clay Learning and Teaching Project (https://www.e-claylearning.ca/), made possible by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Participants are eligible for a course fee rebate of $100 for taking part and providing feedback on the course.
