Course Description:
This is a five-hour introductory course that is primarily designed to cover the basic materials,
chemistry and the mixing of Cone 6 glazes.
Topics of discussion will include: studio safety, how to read a glaze recipe, chemicals and their property, preparation of bisque ware, troubleshooting common glaze faults, measuring specific gravity, mixing glazes, washes and slips as well as the responsibilities of studio members when using the glaze room. This course is well suited for absolute beginners and for individuals who need a review on glaze mixing as most have been away from the studio due to the pandemic.
Understanding how glazes work is fundamental to producing safe and well-designed work.Glazes can be unpredictable if they are not applied properly, they can craze, blister, run off the ware and sometimes just look ugly. This course will also help you on your journey in developing your own personal glaze palette.
Students will need to supply their own notebook and pen, rubber gloves, apron and a NIOSH N95 grade mask (available Canadian Tire or Home Depot). This course should be taken prior to the electric kiln firing course.
All participants are required to watch the WPW video, “Glazing at WPW” which is located on our website and YouTube.
